 FAQ: Westbridge Accounting

  • How much will I pay to have you prepare my returns
Tax return preparation fees are based upon the complexity of the return and the amount of time required to complete. Short forms start at $75 and long forms start at $120. These rates include a Massachusetts full-year resident return and electronic filing of both the Federal and Mass. returns. An hourly fee is added for any bookkeeping necessary (such as totaling receipts for Schedules C, E, F, etc), for state part-year resident returns and more complex returns. If you would like an estimate, please feel free to call or email my office.

  • When should I schedule an appointment for my taxes
Yesterday (just kidding). I strongly suggest you schedule four or more weeks in advance if you want an evening or Saturday appointment (especially in February).

  • Do you accept walk-ins
No. My practice is by appointment only.

I accept cash, checks, Mastercard, VISA and Discover cards.

  • Do you offer Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs)
No. In fact I have been quoted in Businessweek chastising the IRS for assisting banks in facilitating these short-term loans. I have also voiced my concerns to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate, the Mass. Attorney General, the Mass. Division of Banks and WCVB's Susan Wornick.

  • Can I have my tax preparaton fee withheld from my refund?
Yes, in certain circumstances. 1. Your preparation fees are less than $400 2. Your federal refund exceeds your preparation fees. 3. You agree to receive your federal refund by direct deposit. 4. You have not had your tax refunds offset in the past for child support, delinquent taxes, defaulted student loans, etc. or any other debt involving the Financial Management Services of the U.S. Government (aka FMS). 5. You sign a form that gives me permission to collect my fee from your refund and route the difference to your bank account. If it is a joint return both spouses must consent and sign this form. A $20 processing fee will be charged for this service.

 FAQ: Preparation and Filing

  • How long will it take for you to prepare my return
90% of my clients walk out with their return in hand and filed electronically.

  • Do both my husband and I need to come to the appointment
It is not necessary but it is strongly recommended. Sometimes two heads truly are better than one when it comes to trying to recap everything that happened in your financial lives over a 12 month period. If a joint return is filed and your better half doesn't come in with you then you will have to bring the electronic filing documents home for them to sign and then return them to me. This could delay the processing of your return and possibly delay your refund.

  • I did not receive a W-2 (or 1099) form from my employer (or 401(k), or unemployment, etc.). Do I absolutely have to have the form in order to file my return.
First, try to contact the employer, plan administrator or other department in charge of distributing the form. Most forms must be postmarked by January 31st. If you have not received the form by the end of February and have made a good faith attempt to obtain it you can use a reasonable estimate of your income and withholding (such as a last pay stub or account statement) to file your taxes.

  • How long does it take to receive my refunds
Generally, most federal refunds take 2-3 weeks from the date the IRS receives the electronic return. Most Massachusetts refunds are received in a week. Note however there may be significant delays in the beginning of the filing seasons for Federal refunds due to last minute changes to the Tax Code. Thank your Congressmen for that one!

  • I received a letter with my mutual fund 1099 forms indicating that the values reported are "preliminary and subject to change". What should I do?
Because of the complexity of calculating "qualified dividends", many brokers and mutual fund companies request an extension of time from the IRS to send out "final" 1099 Forms. If you use the first form you receive on your tax return and later the figures are changed then an amended tax return will need to be filed. There is an additional fee to refile a tax return, therefore, I recommend scheduling a mid-March appointment instead of a February appointment to avoid having to have the returns prepared twice.

FAQ: Problem Resolution and Taxpayer Representation
  • After I filed my return a W-2 arrived from a job I worked for just a couple of weeks last year. What now?
Mail or fax me a copy of the W-2. I will prepare an amended tax return for you and return it via mail for filing. An amended return fee will be billed for this service.

  • I received a notice from the IRS that I did not report all of my income. They are proposing that I pay $XXX. What should I do?
Fax, mail or email me a copy of the IRS notice (both front and back) immediately. There is a very short window of opportunity between when their "proposition" becomes an "assessment" and collection activity will start.

  • Even though I haven't filed yet I know I am going to owe taxes that I can't pay in full at this time. What are my options?
Almost any taxpayer who is current with his filings and owes less than $25,000 will qualify for a 3-5 year installment agreement with the IRS (2-3 years for Mass. DOR). This can be filed with your tax return. The $105 fee the IRS charges is reduced if you pay via electronic funds withdrawal. Please remember that not filing is the worst option. The penalties for failing to file are worse than the penalties for paying late. If paying in installments is not possible, we can discuss other options at your appointment.

  • I just received a notice that I am being audited! Can you help?
Enrolled Agents are licensed by the IRS to represent taxpayers with matters pertaining to examinations (audits), collections (leins, levies, siezures, installment agreements, etc.) and appeals. Call my office immediately so we can determine a course of action.
